Security system does NOT display PIN code on odometer
Hi all,
bit of a perplexing issue that I need help with please. I have a 2003 Fatboy that has the security system installed. It does not have the siren. When I bought the bike, it came with one key fob (press button). This works perfectly. Press it once, bike arms, press it twice, it disarms.
Now, the problem... I didn't feel comfortable owning one Fob, so purchased a spare, but there is no way that I can program it to the bike.
I follow the instructions: on/off/on/off/on left * 2, right * 1 - hold in button on fob - wait for acknowledgment (which never comes). While I was at it, I was interested to find out the current PIN. I followed the instructions, but nothing is displayed on the Odometer at all - except the current mileage. Years ago, I had a 2003 Road King and the PIN would display on the odemeter and you could work your way through it to change if required using left/right turn signals.
When I look closer- upon arming the security system, the lights flash as they should, but the speedo needle does a big spasm and goes all the way to the right and stays there. When I disarm, it goes back to Zero where it belongs.
So... would I be correct in assuming that the current PIN is NOT displaying on the odemeter because there is some sort of short going on? (given the erradic speedo needle behaviour)
Interestingly, if I go to programming mode and keep double pressing the fob, the flashers flash - once, then twice, then three times, then four, then five. which I guess means the current PIN is 1,2,3,4,5
Is the speedo defective? Or doesn't the fatboy model display on the odometer and only tells you the PIN via the flashes?
Finally, why can't I program a 'new' fob to the bike?
thanks in advance.
thanks for the reply. No, I don't have a dealer manual, just a clynes one - which has no information in it about it. I was under the impression that a 2003 model (fob) doesn't need a dealer to program it.
If the original owner never assigned one, it doesn't show the standard one.
When you program new one, it's going to reset system. Service says original will need to be reset. I just think they mean it will only store one 5 digit code But it can read two different signals from FOBs once programmed for them.
Be careful. You really need the OEM electrical diagnostic manual. Must be 30 pages on my 04. Not sure what the rules are for putting that all on here .
Just hitting the switches quick enough takes a little practice.
I would set alarm it and then try the standard factor set code to see if that will disarm it. That original code was set in the chip.
Why unlike what you set shows and it doesn't. I use all 1. Battery dies, I just rock the signals alternating one time.

I don't believe there is a code set at the factory.
The dealer will either set the code when you buy the bike, and/or each dealer will have a code THEY always use when setting up the bike during dealer prep... Sometimes it's their address numbers, sometimes 1-1-1-1-1, sometimes something else...
The FOB assignment, the security code, and the marrying between TSSM & ECM are covered in the Factory Service Manual for the model/year. (see posts #4 & #6)
The BCM bikes can all be easily changed with the dealer Digital Tech II, or one of the available diagnostic tools like Techno-Research Centurion, Diag4bikes, and even my cheaper Twin Scan IV.
