Gas cap questions.........
Y'know, iffen y'all got a disagreement on some technical issue, it's usually pretty easy to settle: Someone quote the dang service manual! And quote the one pertaining to the bike in question!
From all the bickering goin' on, I'm pretty sure the originator of this thread ain't got an answer, yet. At best, there is an answer, but it's buried in the dung heap here.
tripl8, yer outta line with the name-callin'.
Mega, don't be knockin' my '78 AMF Shovel that went 125k before a top end was needed, went over 200k before the bottom needed work, never needed any tranny work, and wasn't an oil leaker to boot!
SoCal, my apologies to you. Have you gotten an answer that will help you?
Chris
I don't think it's a compensation issue, nor is it entirely a matter of being an ***. This is two threads in a row where Mega has posted a fairly technical response and people have taken exception to it. Things just escalate from there. Nobody's innocent in the escalation, but, there's not too many of us that would be inclined to stand by and be insulted, much less have our professional competency repeatedly questioned.
Simple solution, as Skip said, identify the source of your information. If it comes from technical journals, quote 'em. If it comes from significant experience gettin' your hands dirty, indicate it. Personally, I'm interested in the technical perspective, and I enjoy the differing views, but when it's reduced to name calling and trash talkin'...it's a waste of my time.
Yeah, yeah, if it's a waste of my time, why am I posting? I'd like to see things get back on topic, then people can learn some things.

When someone has the experience of years working on HDs as a living, I listen and evaluate. They've seen more stuff than I'll ever see, though I do all my own work. When someone has a particular bike and relates their experiences with it, I listen and evaluate. I don't have their bike, so I don't know their experiences with it. When a magazine publishes an article, I read and evaluate. And I know they'll seldom publish an article too derogatory to a product, 'cause their money comes from advertising, and not from subs & counter sales. When a manufacturer says his latest gizmo is the bestest ever made, I read and evaluate. I know he ain't gonna tell me where he was able to take short cuts to save a buck so he could better compete in the market place, and I also know those shortcuts might be fantastic new designs or manufacturing methods.
Having said the above, you'll notice I deleted one particular post that had no relevant info in it, but consisted of name-callin'. I've just decided to edit several of the posts that have some info in 'em that are quoting the name-callin'. Give it a rest, guys. Y'all don't like something you read, put yer dang ego aside, analyze the statement, do a little research, then engage yer 3 working brain cells before responding.
In both threads I didnt start ANY name calling whatsoever, until a few other members who obviously lack the same technical knowledge started baiting me. Its that simple. I never have a problem with other opinions, but I do have a problem when people state things that are obviously inccorect or based on opinions with nothing technically sound backing them up.
Like the gas cap issue. Its well known that if your tank is vented by other means to equalize pressure, then a vented gas cap is not needed. I listed a couple of products that will negate needing to use a vented gas cap. One being a vented petcock for carb'd models, another being a tank thats also vented itself. Now for an extra bit of "safety" of making sure your tank stays equalized you can still run a vented gas cap along with a vented tank or a vented petcock, but it isnt needed. I got 3 of my own bikes and countless customers who ride their own bikes with a standard non vented cap that also states otherwise. Thats that. End of subject.
As for the AMF bikes, hey if you got one, and its running trouble free, and your happy with it, two thumbs up for ya, and thats sincere. There are alot of products out on the market that help to correct alot of the flaws they had 25-30 years ago. But I still think they are POS AMF issue due to the poor factory tolerances and mismatched metals used on the engines, just wasnt a good period for HD(or to me an AMF bike with HD badging) IMO. I have corrected and rebuilt a number of them, and all are running well today to the best of my knowledge. If Im going to go nostalgia though, I go back to the Pan and Knuckleheads. I got a couple of each waiting for a proper rebirth once I locate a worthy chassis.
Maybe that full moon passed..............or the aerocept kick'd in..............
After all the posts I still really don't have my answer. So is it vented or not and can I take off the dummy cap and put a custom one on?
Thanks again.............
I'm new to the forum so was wandering thru the topics. Saw there wasn't a reply about the tank. I just looked at a damaged '04 tank off a Fatboy. The left (dummy) side where the gas guage sits does not have threads for a cap. It has a series of four nubs about 1/2 inch down that looks like something clips past it to hold in the gas guage and has the same depth as the screw in side on the right.
I'm not sure but I think Kuryakn sells a pop in piece so a fake gas cap can be put on the left side.
Merry Christmas!!!
Whatever you do, if you cut the wires on the dummy cap with the fuel gauge, for god's sake, cap the ends or remove the wiring. You don't want to burn yourself up. As far as the gas cap goes. I have a 2003 fatboy with the kuryakyn caps and it is vented. A very small hole is in the cap not even noticable. Buy a vented one and use it, you will never see the hole and your safe. just my .02
