If you think you might get sloppy with the brake fluid, get an old spray bottle with water and use on any areas you spilled the brake fluid.IE: paint!

Im not too concerned about getting sloppy with the brake fluid, especially since it’s the rear brake and the master cylinder is close to the ground and by the down tubes at the front of the bike.

Ok thanks. I can’t believe that Legacy actually had the rebuild kit in stock. It will probably be dark when we get home because the OL has to go to SAMs and Walmart and who knows where else, but at least I got what I needed at the Harley shop. I’ll probably start removing the old master cylinder in the morning and will give you a shout if I run into a problem. I really appreciate offer to help me on this and also for the advice, as well as everyone else who gave advice.

Mini update. I got some brake fluid and bled the master cylinder until there were no more air bubbles in the reservoir. The pedal isn’t solid but it does build up some pressure after pumping it a few times. I’m hoping that after rebuilding the mc and bleeding it, the rear brake will start working again. I’ll start on it in the morning.

From the descriptions you have given in this thread I'd bet money it's the M/C causing this.

Sometimes I do loose tho

I’m hoping you are right. I may wait a day or two before I start on it. It’s my wife’s bike and isn’t able to ride as she is needing a knee replacement, so I’m not in any hurry, but I do want to get it done. After it cools off a little more, I’ll be getting out the random orbital polisher and do some paint correction and polishing all three bikes.

Gonna have to put this on hold for a few days. When I picked up the master cylinder rebuild kit, I completely forgot to pick up some banjo sealing washers or crush washers, whatever they are called. It will probably be Friday or Saturday before I go back to Odessa to the Harley shop. Dammit.

Got everything I need to rebuild master cylinder and am about to start remove it from the bike. Do I need anything more than brake cleaner to clean out the reservoir after I disassemble it?

Look for potting on the walls where the plunger goes, if you have pitting replace the master cylinder.
