Hi , Can someone tell me the proper jet size that should be used on a some what stock evo.By some what stock I mean it has drag pipes and an S&S breather . The bike is a 1989 FXST Thanks, Bernie
You would probably do good upping the low speed to about a 44-45 from the stock 42 and the high speed to something in the area of 175-180 . You'll find the stock jetting in the carb section of the factory manual. There are expensive ways and kits like different needles and jet kits that have parts you don't even use to do this, but the upsizing of the jets and possibly shimming of the needle would get you in about the same area for much less $$$ Probably about $6-$8 total.
The stock jetting for that bike would be in the 42/ 160 area from the factory. You should consider replacement of the drag pipes to get the bike to run better. They are not conducive to making power on anything but the top end. Here's a link to a how to make the drag pipes more efficient https://www.hdforums.com/m_79533/tm.htm
