Here is the deal, I have already ordered the progressive lowering kit through my local HD dealer for the rear and next week I'm taking the bike in to be lowered. It's something I always wanted to do, and now is the right time.
Here is what I need from you.....I'm not sure how much to lower. I hear that 2" is too much and 1" is enough to make a difference. I don't see how one inch is going to make much of a difference. HD also recommends one inch.
Can you please reply with any info you might have on the subject!!!
I dropped mine close to 2' .You will need to set the pre-load really stiff to keep it from bottoming out that low.The ride is stiff but I,ve gotten used to it and don't even pay attention to it any more.Without dropping a ton of cash on an air ride it's damn near impossible to have the lowered look without a pretty rough ride. www.fatbillscustoms.com has some info that might help you out.
You did not say what year your bike was. My fatboy is an 05, and I'm 5'9. My best friend has an 07 fatboy and he is 6'1". The "stock" height difference between his and mine is about 1 inch (07 1 inch higher). I feel fine with my clearance as is, both feet on the ground firmly. When I ride his 07, I can only keep 1 foot on the ground, and it is uncomfortable. My brother-in-law has and 05 Herritage (same bike as fatboy) and is lowered 1 inch. when I ride his bike, I feel it's too low for me, scraping floorboards every time. Just my 2 cents.
My bike is a 2004 and I'm 5'11". I'm not lowering the bike because of any clearance issues, I just like the low ride look.
BTW, my buddy also has an 07 fatboy and it's so high it looks like u're riding a jeep.
I ride my 07 Fat Boy to work daily and appreciate the commanding view of the road ahead. The high seatposition, in my case (I'm 5'11"), is of great advantage in heavy traffic, and they actually make way for me asI'm about to over take them while splitting lanes.
I slammed my 03 Fatboy 1inch and I love it. It looks awesome and handles way better. I have 18inch wheels on mine and to give you an idea how much difference 1inch makes, before the kit you could see the top of the tire sticking out of the top of the fender, now all you see is wheel. Check out my scooter under photo gallery !!!!!!!! ghill69
I'm lowering my 05 fatty in about a week and a half. I have a friend with the same bike and he went one inch. It DOES make a difference!! However, just to be a little difference, I might try going a little lower....maybe an extra 1/2 inch. We'll see. Show off some before and after pics when you do!!
I have the HD rear lowering kit which drops it about 1 inch or so.Its not too bad but i wont go lower for fear of scraping pipes and floorboards.occasionally scrape the boards now so any lower is not on.
