Air Cleaner/Oil Question
On Sunday, I took my bike out for a short ride (a little over 100 miles). I noticed that I had oil all over the oil tank, my rear header, and the push rods on my rear cylinder after about 40 miles. It looked like the oil was coming from around the bottom of the push rods. I dropped the bike off at the dealer to have the oil leak fixed since the bike is a '08 andit should be a warranty issue. The service manager called me yesterday and said the oil was coming from my air cleaner. He said something along the lines of the stock air cleaner cycles oil through it and re-uses it, but the air cleaner I have just drops the oil. The Wimmer air cleaner I have on my bike is the same one I had on my Deuce (took it right off the Deuce and put it on the Custom). I never had any issue with oil leaking from the air cleaner and getting all over my bike. So I find it hard to believe that the same air cleaner would start doing this on my new bike. I told the service manager I never had any issues with the air cleaner when it was on my Deuce, and that I don't understand why it would start now. He said he would take another look and let me know what he finds out. Does this sound right? If so, is there any way to fix the problem, or do I need to just keep checking my oil level and keep cleaning the chrome?
Do you check your oil level, after the engine has warmed up and on the jiffy stand? I was thinking, if you weren't checking the oil level properly, itis possible that the problem is caused by overfilling the oil tank.

I just had the 1,000 mile service done about 3weeks ago. I haven't checked the oil since it was done. The bike isn't burning it, and I haven't seen it leaking any until now. So I haven't felt the need to check the oil level.
This is what I get for not doing some of these mods to my bike myself. I am confused.
I had no idea that oil is passed, or given to, or returned from the air cleaner (or anywhere near it). It doesn't make sense unless we are back to the day of 2-stroke motors with oil injection.
Without hesitation, today, I am tearing my football cover and air filter off to look for any kind of oil path up there. Unless, of course, someone can make sense of this to me.
I guess while I'm at it, I'll check my blinker fluid level too. I have a lot to learn.

I had a similar issue with the stock airfilter on my Heritage. I couldn't figure out what the problem was and a buddy of mine told me to check the air filter. I pulled it off and replaced it along with a breather hose and haven't had a problem since. How old is the AC that you put on there and when is the last time it was cleaned?
I'm not sure about the new bikes but my '05 Standard has two rubber hoses that pass from the crankcase vents back into the air breather. It's just a way to get the cranks vented without spraying oil all over the bike. I'm thinking the bike might have too much oil in the system. Overfilling the bike is easy because when you change the oil and add the "capacity amount" shown in the owners manual, you'll over fill the bike every time. Since the dealer did your service, I'd think they would know not to over fill the bike but stranger things have happened.
So, when I change the oil in my bike, even though the manual says 3-1/2 quarts capacity, I add about 2-1/2 quarts, run the bike to warm and circulate the oil then check the oil and add to the proper hot level.

that doesn't make sense about the air filter getting oil, Poorboy, let us know when you take yours apart! Sounds like the dealer will do anything to avoid the "w" word

Well there goes that idea. There is no reason that it should be doing what mine was after only four months. It is possible as others suggested that the oil was overfilled.

I put the air cleaner on my Deuce in May. I rode with it on there until I traded the Deuce in July. The Custom had the stock air cleaner on it until I got my pipes and T-max. The air cleaner, exhaust, and T-max were all installed Oct 4th. So the air cleaner has been used for about 4 months total. It hasn't had the chance to get dirty yet, so I haven't cleaned it.
