G5, I'm a chiropractor and the first thing you need is an MRI or at least an X-ray. It is also good practice to have a physical with a cardio workup to eliminate other issues like everyone said but get the MRI as soon as you can. *IF* it is a disc problem a good chiropractor is the first place I'd go. It is true though just like any profession you want to steer clear of "bad" ones. Until you know what is wrong though it's really hard to tell what your next best step is. I've seen muscular problems cause pain and radiating paresthesia like you're describing before too. Let me know if I can help.

Mike
Thanks for the info and support guys. I don't believe it's cardio at all. It was a qualified spinal orthopedic specialist who gave the preliminary diagnosis. I'm 39, low blood pressure, fit to slender. I don't really think it's cardio. My family has a history of arthritis, so we aren't known for strong bones. I will definitely consider the chiropractic route, though I have certain biases with all due respect. So many are mills. If it will help, I'm all for it. Mike, PM me with a referral in the central FL area if you know of an ethical and competent practitioner if you are comfortable doing so. BTW, I did have x-rays done and he couldn't really tell if there is disc compression going on. MRI is next if I don't respond to the meds and exercise. I'm praying it will straighten itself out, but it's not getting any better and that is unusual for me. Usually my aches and pains don't last for more than a day and this feels serious. Don't mind apes- rode with them for years before they were in fashion. I just can't fathom not being able to ride anymore. SUCKS.

G5,

I am a Navy Physical Therapist and can tell you that your symptoms do not sound like a classic herniated disc. Neuritis symptoms do not originate between you shoulder blades. At your age I would avoid surgery like the plague unless you have extinguished all other options. The outcomes for surgery for cervical or lumbar fusions (which is what is commonly recommended) is equivicol at best. I would ask for a referral to see a PT or chiro long before I would consider surgery. Hope you get on track with what you need.

I agree, I'm not down with surgery AT ALL. I'm seriously considering a DC to check it out. I just had an unpleasant experience with one back in June after I broke my foot in a parking lot mishap with an SUV not watching where he was headed. The whole deal is freaking me out as I usually rebound from aches and pains quickly. My bike IS rough, but I don't remember bottoming out that bad recently. I'm just wondering if riding hard bikes (many of which were rigid or close to it) for over 20 years would set up this kind of thing. I'm truly puzzled and more than a little worried.

G5,

Don't get hung up in searching for the cause, the cure is what you are after. I'll keep posted to hear how it turns out for you.

Don't go under the knife unless it is the absolute LAST Resort. You must give it time. I had the same problem three years ago. Could hardly walk or sleep. I went to a chiropractor it seemed to help a little. Not much. Had a MRI and the doctor told me the same thing......maybe operation. I started taking Glucosamine with Chondroitin +msm. I flooded my system with it for the first week and stayed on a normal dose after that. It is like grease for the joints. The one thing that I can point to that turned my back problem around was going to a friends house that had a back massager. It was a simple pad that rolled out on a hard table and you laid on your back on top of it. This thing rolled up and down the back and pulledback and forth in the same motion. Painful but but bitchin Was on it three times over a two week period.Pain was gone.It was simply amazing. I think he bought it atrelax theback store. Good luck and I hope you find some relief.

BoneCrusher. now i see how you got your handle !!! Like you say : took me a few different ones to find a real good one in my area. The one i go to now does great work and very down to earth. In my case for a short time i went to my family doctor, he give me muscle relaxers, and pain pills for the bad days. I am going to go with some mid size apes on my new Heritage... The mid apes on my pervious bike (street bob), were much better for my back.... those bars kept me in a very upright position while riding. I think that is a key factor too,at least for me.

The ultra sound, and other treatments i got helped 90% .. I still go twice a month . At times moist heat helps... other time ice helps. I have some very good stuff called sombra , a natural pain relieving gel .http://www.painreliever.com/sombra_sombra.html

I have had various back ailments since I was young. Chiro can help (father-in-law). My point here is that a few people told me that putting a wallet in your pocket is a bad deal. I didn'tsee much credibility in that. After periods of low back pain all the way to severe spasms, Igave it a try. Didn't cost anything. Back has never bothered me again for years. I'm not saying this applies to your specific back problem, but in general, if you carry a wallet in your back pocket, that would be the first thing I would change.

I'll also recommend chiropractor. There are some that will discount the xrays and treatments. My average visit takes 10 minutes total and costs $20 I had scoliosis and I do currently have sciatica. My sciatica is still there but I can do alot more than I was able to and the numbness in the arms while riding, went away.
