Default Bad news- back troubles...

Guess I'm paying the price for riding a slammed bike all these years. Woke up Friday morning with a stabbing pain between my shoulders that is radiating down my right arm. Went to the Dr. yesterday and he suspects a herniated disc. Looks like it could be a month or two before I can even look at a motorcycle. I may need surgery. Anyone else had such issues? Man this sucks. Looks like I see a bagger in my future. I'm wondering if a set of 442's and 16" apes would help?

Get a 2nd opinion and have a look at your heart. Impact damage to a disc is usually a lower back disc with pain radiating down a leg as a result of pressure on the cyatic nerve. Heart problems are not always in your chest and what you describe could be a blockage in the anterior vessle of the heart. Speaking from experience here......

I'll consider that. Strange thing though is that the pain is coming from the exact spot where my shoulders push forward to my drag bars. Guess I need an MRI to be certain but we're gonna wait and see how I respond to meds and exercise.

I agree ... There are many more pains related to heart disease than people think. I have found out that jaw pain and tooth aches are a very common sign of heart problems. My father had a dentist appointment to check his teeth right before they found 95% blockage. If you own a Harley and frequent this board I bet you are in the Cardiac target zone.

I would also suggest having your heart checked out. A friend of mine had similar symptoms and he ended up needing a stint put in.

With a little luck, you may just have a pinched nerve and it will go away on its own.
Can you get someone to take a picture, of you, while you are sitting on the bike, in your normal riding position? I checked out your photo album. Not knowing how tall you are, I couldn't visualize what your riding position would look like. You might have to change your handlebars if your problem is a pinched nerve.

Another vote for a chiropractor. My mother had almost the exact same symptoms as you, but mix a little numbness in with pain in the arm. She now goes to a chiro religiously and hasnt had a return to the symptoms. Although it may be a bit late in your case if the disk is actually herniated. I would recommend that you go after your surgery, and that anyone who doesnt go try it out. Ive gone for the better part of my life and between wrestling, football, and now the army, i have yet to have any real back pain. Once you get your back right, you dont even need to go that much. Well worth whatever the visits cost imo.

Yes the apes help. I had my left shoulder tore out 5 yrs. ago and now the right one is acting up. Plus arthritis in feet, hips and hands and the 18 inchers allowed me to relax more. Motrin twice a day helps also.

G5, I'm a chiropractor and the first thing you need is an MRI or at least an X-ray. It is also good practice to have a physical with a cardio workup to eliminate other issues like everyone said but get the MRI as soon as you can. *IF* it is a disc problem a good chiropractor is the first place I'd go. It is true though just like any profession you want to steer clear of "bad" ones. Until you know what is wrong though it's really hard to tell what your next best step is. I've seen muscular problems cause pain and radiatingparesthesia like you're describing before too. Let me know if I can help.
