I know there are a lot of posts converting softails to wide tires using aftermarket kits...but what about converting a pre-200mm, 2004 Night Train to a 200mm bike? Using H-D parts from ebay? There is some of the 2007 stuff out there now that people are switching that out for the really wide stuff...Is it possible to buy the factory 200mm take-off stuff and replace it on my skinny tired bike? If so, what items do I need other than the swingarm, fender w/ struts, wheel and tire? Do I need to do something funky with the primary or secondary? I know this is probably a "tired" post but I could not find much data on switching the Harley parts around. Thanks for the assistance!

pull the entire primary (rather easy to do although some may disagree) and install the skinny belt (with air tools i could prolly have it off in 15 minutes, its not THAT bad)(use a 1/4 inch drive ball-head allen to get to the starter bolts)
get the wheel off a 200mm softail
cut the frame horns off
get 9 inch fender struts and a 9 inch fender
i imagine it could be done that way
this is what i would prolly have done, but alas i started building a 200 tire sportster chopper to satisfy my fat tire urge
you can buy all harley parts and use these. www.customstruts.com they are $895 though. Everytime I contemplated it on the old bike, the cost was too much.
XXX Arlen Ness has got a set of struts for 545.00 that are real nice. Most strutless fenders are 500.00 or less now. I think the new rear wheels have a 1" axle in them now and I'm not sure the bearingscan be interchanged. Someone will chime in soon that is sure. Samann do a search for chops fat tire fat build. Your year Train will accept a 200 on an 18/5.5 wheel with all stock parts with the addition of a new fender and cutting off the fender horns. The wide belt will fit just not much clearance as some would like to see.
I used a Metzeler 180, 9" strutless rear fender aftermarket brakelight and signals, and an 18x5.5 wheel.Rotor, caliper pulley and belt are all stock.A 200 would have never fit, I'm REAL close to the belt now.I cut off the frame horns, stuck the wheel and tire in, fitted my fender and took it to get painted. While it was at the painters I spliced my new brake light and turn signals into the stock harness. My wheel was $900.00, if I would have bought a less expensive wheel (easy to find), I could have came in under a grand.$800.00 is too much for struts, I don't care where they came from.
You don't need the swingarm, just the other parts to do the 200 swap. The swingarms are the same width. To use the 06 andlater caliper and bracket, you'll need to grind (or file) down the tab on your swingarm, that holdsthe brake caliper in place. You'll also be better off using an 06 belt and pulley. The 06 is a 70 tooth pulley, and will give you the same gearing you have now. The 07 and later, are 66 tooth pulleys designed for the 6 speed overdrive trans. I know the 06 wheels have 3/4" bearings, and nt03 says the 07's are the same.
Sruts are another important thing to consider, or a strutless fender. The custom struts mentioned above, are designed to use a stock harley 200fender. Problem is, harley's 200fendersare not 9". I believethey're about 9 1/2". There isn't a real big selection of aftermarket fenders in 9 1/2". Hogpro has one, and I'm sure there are others out there.. Using 9" struts, or a strutless fenderwill give you a much bigger selection to choose from.
Okay...So, I need an '06 belt, pulley and wheel. What about the '06 struts? Will they work with the stock '06 Harley fender? So I can do a wheel, belt, pulley, fender and struts off of an '06? I apologize for all of the stupid questions; I am just trying to get a head start before "tearing into the machine"...by the way, anybody interested in an '07 Night Train swingarm? Bought one off ofebay for 200 clams...thinkin' that this would help me..
Thanks again for all of the info!
