Fuel Gauge is Garbage
Bike: 2005 EFI Fatboy. 9K miles.
The fuel gauge on this hunk of expensive iron is about as reliable as the weather. It got stuck on full all day yesterday on a 200 mile ride. Today, I put 90 miles on it and it decides to behave and the gauge falls to where it should be. Frequently, the thing just drops in the red zone. Only way I keep from screwing things up is watch my odometer for fill ups.
Anyone else have this problem and what is the fix??

There have been many with the same problem as you have. It seems that the float hangs up inside of the tank when you fill up and then drops when it dislodges it self like maybe hitting a bump or something. You could have the dealer work you over or open up the top of the tank and check it out yourself. Just use NEW screws and gasket if you do it otherwise you could have a fuel leak. The screws have a sealer on them to prevent this.
thats when you give them the.. well my honda didn`t do that routine.. or the lets just send harley a email and see what they say routine..or you could ask for harley head office phone #.. if you spend that kinda money on a bike they better treat you right
Good luck - mine was in the shop four times until I gave up and figured they would never fix it. I'm a bit concerned, the first time they changed the screws, times 2-4 the work order did not indicate new screws.
On mine, they first did the "bend the rod" thing, second time they "calibrated" it, 3rd time they replaced the sending unit, any 4th time they replaced the gauge. After the gauge was changed it became much better but not where I think such an expensive bike should be. But mine seemed to fail after the weather here turned real hot.

my 04 fatboy has never had that problem but the fuel guage is not particularly reliable. I detecked a edge against HD, why? a good dealer will do his best to fix it from sticking, but don't expect the guage to be accurate to a tenth of a gallon. Harley's are not Lexus, but with few exceptions they are very good long time bikes. Lightened up, its only a fuel guage,.....if the weather is good go riding.
