tach wiring
Just ordered a mini tach kit (67946-96B) on ebay for my 04 Heritage Classic. Won't have until Tues and was wondering if this is plug and play or if I will need to splice into the wiring harness somewhere and will the tank have to be lifted or removed to do this. Can anyone answer these questions?
I just installed a mini tach (68953-04) on my 07 Heritage. Don't count onthe tach beingplug and play and don't count on the instructions being of much use. The ground wire is easy enough. The power wire taps into an empty space in the fuse box. The signal wire was supposed to plug into a connection at the speedometer,but I had to run the signal wire directly from the ECM plug. I ran the wires under the tank with outlifting it. It's a little tight butit can be done. Good luck with the install.
I just installed mine on Deluxe 07'. Won;t say defnitely a plug and play. But, easy enough. I ran both ground and +12 wires under tank along wire harness. +12v plugged (pin insertion)right into my P&A slot on fuse block. The signal wire also plugged (pin insertion) into speedo connector. Only thing I had to do was remove the secondary lock pin and also round off the pin crimp. was a little tight to insert into connector.
Takes a little work be pretty simple. Works great without any problems 1st time starting up.

Oh yeah, I also did not remove the tank. did this previously last month doing my new bars, grips, cables and lines. Easier to get at the switch assembly connectors. But, doing tach became an afterthought, so didn;t want to go through taking tank off again. Installing tach is simpler and doesn;t require removing tank. Just prop the back of tank up with some towels, and slide tank back. Will have plenty of room to pass the wiring along the wiring harness and though the plastic harness holder....
How the (*& do you remove the secondary lock?? - I have the manual - read the pry out instructions - but duh! it ain't working forme - I'm afraid to pry to hard cause with my luck I'll break the darn thing
I just finished installing a tach on my 2004 fatboy and it was a real pain during the process but in retropect, fairly straight forward. There are some great posts if you search on tach installation. But here's the basic stuff:
I used 'suitcase' connectors that allow you to tap into the ground and power from the existing speedo wires. Just disconnect the speedo deutsche connector and isoloate any of the black wires for ground and the orange and white for the power. The suitcase connectors availble at home depot for a couople of bucks. They simply guillotine the wires by slicing into the wire casing. This was the simplest part of the installation. Now for the tach signal, you can use the #3 connector slot in the speedo tach connector. You'll need to disassemble the connetorby using a thin screwdriver and take the top off, be careful you don't crack the connector. You can try to insert the pin into the #3 slot w/o disassembly but it coudl be difficult... You'll most likely have to remove a plastic pin that is in the #3 slot. If any of the connectors touch, you may end up frying the instrument fuse which happened to me but no big deal, just use the spare. It should be a less than an hour job if you dont' have to run to the HD shop for more pins...

Thanks for the info on this - I wondered about taping into another power source - but what about amperage - the fuse for the tach (as per instructions) is a max 2AMPS - if you tap into another source (which all seem to be with 15 AMP fuses) can you fry your tach?
If not - my FLHR has an unused Orange White wire in the headlight harness - could this be used?

BTW you can also use pin #3 off the ECM for the tach signals. That's where I tapped mine into and it works fine.
Don't worry about frying the tach if you tap into the orange and white wire. Also, I am aware that you can use #3 pin in the ECM but I'd rather take it off of the speedo which works fine than mess with the ECM connector.....and have to run the wires all the way back to the ECM connector when you can simply use the speedo connector....just a personal preference....no moving the seat, etc....
I am installing mini tach on 2003 King no stock tach. Tried wiring signal.wire into pin hole #3 on back of speedometer. No tach movement. What am I missing?
