27 tooth compensating sprocket?
Hey yall, long time lurker and first time posting. I'm Eric, down in Daytona FL, with a 06 Nightrain; running at 95" and with Andrews 37G cams, putting out 88hp and 98tq. Bought the bike new in 05 with 10 miles, up to 46k now. Should be more, but what you gonna do when you have 2 deployments taking up your time. Currently still running a stock 25t compensating setup, does anyone know of or have experience with a 27t sprocket? Don't really want to swap my final pulleys out, and I'm gonna have to replace my comp sprocket and alternator rotor soon anyway. Figured since there's no appreciable curves around here, might as well go fast. Thanks in advance
Also, I have already talked to Baker Drivetrains since I saw something about the sprocket in question in the DD6 setup, but was told that they don't sell the sprocket individually, and that it even fits in a stock primary. But other readings that I have done say that 27 goes no problem. JP cycles doesn't offer one as well.
main reason i want to go that way is because i do need a new comp sprocket, and my alternator rotor splines are worn out, so I'm gonna have the outer cover off soon anyway. If I don't have to do more than that, I'd be extremely happy
I put the 27t engine sprocket (and longer diamond primary chain) on my 2001 Heritage about 2,000 miles ago. I noticed the difference immediately. The stock engine sprocket on my Heritage is 24t.
Before, I would be in 5th around 50-55MPH. With the 27t, I'm slippin into 5th around 60-65MPH.
I did a little research, if you want to get up and go to max RPM ASAP, then stock or 23t. If you want to do highway cruisin all day at 75-85, the 27t is an interresting alternative.
My interest was in riding with my crew (all of whom own the 6 speeds) and wanted to get that performance without the cost.
Engine sprocket means no recalibrating the speedo... everything from the tranny back and recalibrating is a must (unless you are capable of doing the math in your head.. ha!).
Illusion Cycles in California (www.illusionmotorcycles.com) is where I finally found it. Those folks were easy to talk to and do business with. The cost, $250, was a bit steep (IMHO).
Hope this helps

yeah, Illusion is about the only place I've found anything either. I posted about the same thing in the driveline section around the same time as this one, and according to Mark from Baker Drivetrain, they offer one as well. I can only expect it to have a steeper price tag. How is the bottom end and acceleration with that setup? Yours is the first hands on experience I've found. Was the longer chain a necessity? Everyone one I've talked to about it say that I could more than likely run a stock length chain, but thats it.

I have a 99 low rider with a somewhat built 88, I ride mostly 2 up and just got done with doing the 27 tooth...I can't believe that I could barely tell the difference on the bottom end, leaving stop signs in 2nd gear. What I did notice that doing 70-75 was still under 3 grand on the ole tach......which was what I was trying to achieve...Was worth the $........
