Default Seat fitment question

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 84-99 and 00 and up in seat fitment for a softail? When searching ebay for a new seat most are advertised to fit 84-99, or 00 and up. But I have seen some advertised as fitting 84-05. Will the new seats fit the old frames or other way round? Or will old only fit old and new only fit new? I am really confused and apologize if this has been asked and answered before. thanks in advance for any help.

From what I've read the difference is the frame. When H-D switched over from the EVO to TwinCam some frame changes were dictated. Maybe parts would swap with some modifications, but I don't know for sure ..............
