Never have ran one, and i have road in downpurs for miles and miles to get off the hwy. Hurricane type downpours. as long as the engine is running, the amount of water getting thru is negligable. no more than misting water down the intake to decarbon the upper end which is common practice. now, that said, if i wash the bike and soak the airfilter, forget starting it. not only will it destroy the filter, it will wet the plugs and its a no go.
but you have to literally stand there and run a garden hose right on the filter to do this.
I wouldn't worry about it at all guys. I've owned several different planes since 1988 .... all with forward facing air filters, and I've been caught in many storms. Never even a hiccup. They certainly wouldn't install them in the front of planes if there was any legitimate concerns.
This particular plane is a 1946 ... and they're still in the same location today. It's clearly not an issue. I have forward facing intake on my bike as well and have been caught in many downpours with no issues.
Don't over think it guys, it's not worthy of concern
