Default changing handle bars

Im changing handle bars on a 04 fat boy from stock to 16 in apes. what i want to know is what size wire should i use to do the extensions. the local shop told me 12 or 14 gage but im thinking more like 16 to 18. what do you think and what have you had good luck with. im wiring interniley so i think i want them to be as small as i can get away with. any advice would be help full

I think i used 16 gauge wires. The length I used was a 15 inch wire extension kit that had color matched wires.

16 gauge should do it. I would strip the stock casing, and then use shrink tubing. Will be a lot cleaner and tighter, and therefore very easy to pull through bars..

i got 13 inch apes on my deluxe, the wires were already internally wired, 16 guage. Instead of cutting the wires and soldering/shrink tube, i lifted the tank, unplugged the wires, went to the harley shop and got 14 pins (8 left/6 right) and redid the connectors. took a little longer, but well worth it, and it's farely easy. Cost about $5 for all 14 pins
