Default Replace Speedometer

I'm thinking about replacing the Speedometer on my Deluxe with the Nostalgic Speedo with the Tach built in. My question is in the accesorries catalog it says to have the dealer recalibrate it. Does this mean the dealer sets the Odometer on the new Speedo with the actual miles or does he just issue a cetification of the miles when the speedo was replaced.

It's a plug a play install so I hate to get the dealer involved but looks like I have to.

Any idea what the dealers charge for this ??

Unless the MOCO has changed procedures this is how it worked for my 03.

You order the replacement and when you order it you have to specify what the odometer is to read.

The factory or its minions set the replacement at the number you gave them.

Can you imagine the fiasco if dealers had the ability to set odos? Is the miles shown on that used bike real or imagined?

So if you are still riding while awaiting your replacement you will want guesstimate what the total will be when your new one arrives.

I was off by 100 miles.

The dealer is only involved to order the unit certifying what the miles should read.

I installed mine, all the dealer did was order the unit.

Thanks for your response. I checked with a Dealer and they said the same thing as you. Strange how they just go on what you tell them with out any official checking.

Thanks again,

I put a new speedo/tach combo in my '02 Fat Boy last year. Dealer had to order it and specify the mileage so that H-D could ship it with the odometer pre set. It seems to me that a dishonest person could order one with any mileage that they wanted to roll back the miles. In fact I rode 3 or 4 hundred miles before mine came in and was installed. Calibration was never mentioned. It was pretty much plug and play.
