I clean mine often and only use a light mist of oil. The only time I experienced any dripping was when it was real cold (< 35) and I got a lot of condensation.

Excess breather oil being sucked in is usually a result of an overfill of engine oil. Filling above half way between the lines, measured hot, will often do it. As for oiling an air filter, the stock filters don't need it, the accessory filters use it as a sales thing for folks that want to do a little more for their bike. Whether its worth it or not can be argued.

So what are you saying....not to oil a K&N filter before use? That cleaning the filter element and re-oiling every 10,000 mi. is just a scam perpetrated by K&N to get people to spend money?
I think most of us know the stock OEM filter elements do not require oiling, and you just replace them.....but I will bet you dollars to donuts that if you dont re-oil a K & N type filter it will allow particulate to pass through the element. In fact when you buy a brand new K & N filter....weather it is a drop in replacement or a after market type, it comes out of the package pre-oiled......so why in hell would you think you dont need to oil them after they have been cleaned????

I believe air filter oil is used to filter small dust and sand particles, it is necessary. I always keep my motor oil level half way between top and bottom marks, the oil mess came from my air filter not crankcase blow-by.

A K&N needs oiling, a stock filter does not. I would oil a K&N as you are supposed to for that extra protection. TC88 filter on my bike just needs to be washed and reused. Looks like it will last a good while. It does the job. The accessory filters look really nice, just a personal preference of what to use. K&N is not a scam, just a business that makes a good filter, and makes money as it should. To buy or not is up to the rider.

OK.....so now I understand.....I think. Just so you know though....there are some models (not HD AFAIK) that do require you to clean the stock OEM filter in a petroleum solution like kerosene or just gas, and then oil it with filter oil. I only been using K&N filters since about 1980, and I think I got the hang of servicing them now.
