Sounds like a job for LED's!

LED's are an option. I believe they would "show" white behind a clear lens, but that's better than red (if that's the desired effect). I believe Dustmaker wants to use a chrome tinted "red" bulb in the rear, but can't locate a 1156 bulb in that configuration. Thus, his idea to rewire for "dual filiment 1157" bulbs in the rear. One advantage to 1157's in the rear, is that if you had them "running", when the brake light came on it would be much brighter (than the HD solution) due to being dual filiment (like the stock brake light).

Don't know about your state but in
Pennsylvania it is illegal to have amber lights in the back that stay lit all the time.

Not looking to put AMBER in the rear. I want RED ones that are chromed covered. I bought one 1157 in red chrome from JP Cycle for my clear tail light cover and looks great and plenty brite. Here it is:
