I have a 06 fxst that I am getting ready to put a new exhaust on. I was going to be doing the installation myself and wanted to know how difficult it was to rejet the carb. Thanks for any comments.
Installing the new jets is fairly simple. I have done it a few times on CV carb equipped TC88's. What jet kit did you get? I used the HD kit on my current ride, 04 Fatboy, and after messing with the enrichener screw it runs great. I have Samson curb sweepers without baffles, which makes it a little harder to run right, but the sound is well worth it. Try going to www.nightrider.com. They have a great tech article on it. Good luck.
I have had good luck not using a kit. You can replace the slow jet with one size larger, probably a 48, change the needle to a 1988 1200 Sportster needle, cut two coils off of the slide spring, and go out about two turns on the idle circuit screw. Cost will be about 25.00 compared to 80.00 or 90.00 for a kit, and you should get the same results.
Idle screw is under a plug on the bottom the the carb. You need to drill the plug very carefully with a small bit, then screw a wood screw into the hole just enough so that you can pull on the screw and get the plug to come out.
I took a slightly different approach on my FLHT (FullSac True Duals, Wild Pig mufflers and AN Big Sucker). I pulled the carb (gotta the first time to drill out the idle mixture screw plug) and installed a #46 slo jet (up from the #45 stock) and then raised my needle .050" using two #4 brass washers. once installed, I adjusted my idle mixture for a strong idle (around 2 1/2 turns) and she runs great. Gone is the lean surge, carb farts and exhaust popping. Checked the plugs today and they look good - CWO
I run a 48 slow and 195 main...runs Great!
Also you can get a idle mixture needle from, Direct Parts thats adjustable with no tools needed to do any adjustments.
Thanks to TC....its for Keihin Carbs p/n CP005
The women I spoke with when placing my order, stated that her husband invented these mixture screws and sells thousands of them @ 20 bucks plus shipping!
