Question Question about 1 1/4" handlebars...

Hey all,

In the process of changing the bars on my '02 Night Train to a 1 1/4" Flanders ape. Just started into the project, and ran into a "snag" right from the start. Question is: Will the stock front brake master cyl. fit ok on the thicker bars? When I started to install it, it seems as though the thicker bar holds the reservoir out enough to kick the clamp out of square. Don't want to wrench too hard for fear of cracking something, stripping bolts, etc. Anyone run into this? Asked the local H-D dealership about it, and they have no answer, saying that Harley doesn't make a different master cyl. for this app.

Trying to avoid changing to aftermarket parts or anything involving a grinder!

Appreciate the help...

the bars should taper down to 1" at the hand controls. Maybe you have the master cylinder too far "in" towards center of bars.?

So the bars don't have a stepdown to 1in where the grip on and in the center where the risers bolt on? If they don't, then I would guess without seeng it, that you will have to get 1 1.4 in controls. If that is the case it would be cheaper to just buy bars that fit your applicaiton.

As others have posted, you are probably trying to put the master cylinder too far in toward the transition, causing the fitment issue. Try moving the master cylinder out slightly.

Thanks all for the input. Looking at it again, I am sure the clamp for the mc is in the correct position (on the 1" portion of the bar). Maybe I am trying to keep the clamp too close to the transition to 1 1/4"? Seems that if I want a nice clean job, I wouldn't want to be able to see the transition. I should put the clamp right up against the step-up to the thicker portion of the bar...

Yes, but the radius of the resevoir portion to the clamp ortion of the mc is most likely interfering and causing the bindning. Probably have to live with the small gap or take a grinder to the mc transition radius...then get it chromed! I live with the gap...when I get chance I'll take a close up pic to show what I'm talking about.
