Ok heres the deal. Im stuck in Iraq with alot of time to figure out how to tinker with my newly aquired (bought off ebay) softail.
I've searched the web for a fatter tire kit. Came across DM Customs kit. Being the guy that I am I think I can do it better for less. So far Ive come up with this. Im going to use a 2000 softail swing arm. Run a 18x5.5 rim and maybe a 180-200mm tire. I want to keep everything else stock, accept the fender and fender mounts. Any one got any idea as to what size spacers I might need? Or any other tips that might save a guy some a$$ pain later. Or just any other cool tips on an old evo.
i have a 1990 softail also. didnt know you could swap out the swingarm for a 2000 model. but how does that affect the rear drive belt, right now, with a 160 rear, im 1/4 inch away from the rear drive belt.
From what the dude at DM Customs tells me, a 2000 or newer swing arm will allow a 18x5.5 rim with a 200mm. I don't know that the swing arm from a '06+ would work though. They didn't say anything about offsetting anything. It will require removal of the horns on the back. And some spacers.
Get a strutless fender, it will make your life a lot easier. The only difference on the 2006+ swingarm is the caliper mount has been shaved. You will need a narrower belt or most likely a chain if you go with the 200mm.
Sgt Lopez, I looked at the DM set up from iraq as well. Not sure about your 90’ but I have a 99’ night train that I put a 180 metzeler on using the stock swing arm. Im running a 18 X 5.5 inch rear wheel with a strutless Russ Wernimont fender. Had to cut the frame horns off. I used a 70 tooth ž inch pulley and a 2006 HD 133 tooth belt. Needed new rear spacers. Because of the 70 tooth pulley I could no longer use my belt guard so I cut the off the tabs. I think I like it better anyway. Good luck
