put my wheel 18x5.5 & tire 200/55/18 on and cut frame horns off this weekend!!! looks great so far. i had to order a small sprocket spacer and the belt, other than that everything lined up and fits perfectly. i decided not to go with the 2006 fender so i'll be selling the one i bought. its brand new from hd never painted and i can paint it if someone is interested. im just gonna make my original fender work by chopping it up and widening it. attached some pics...
Looking good. I cant waite to get mine done. I bought a Santee 200 kit, I found a heartland 8.5 x 28 fender on e-bay and my buddy who has a custom shop had a set of used heartland struts for the 8.5 fender. I just need to get my wheels and tires, paint all the new tin and do it.
my mate has a 2000 standard, he picked up 08 wheels with pully struts etc at a jumble 4 £240 with almost new tyres bargain, now all we gota do is fit em
Hey Gabadoo, Isn't that a '06 or up rear fender? If so, are the newer struts a direct bolt on? Or what did you have to do to get them to fit right? Also what did you have to do to make the seat fit right.
Your bike looks bad ***! Would love to put a springer on mine later.
original '06 harley belt is $190 dealer. there are knock-offs out there now too, but from what ive read they suck and say right on them "for show use only." kinda wish i went with a chain conversion now that i've read whats involved with replacing belts. i decided against the 06 fender because my 1 year old corbin wont fit it so im chopping 2 '02 fenders up into one. the fender only needs to be widened by about 3/4" to fit the tire. you can use an 06 with struts from customstruts.com ($800) or you can buy 06 struts and tap the front hole on your frame so they bolt up.
OUCH! They're proud of those belts! I take it, that it's gonna be a major pain to swap belts? Have you priced a chain conversion?
I've already got a set of struts and a fender from a '07 Night train. Sucks about the seats not fitting. I have a like new Sundowner seat that I use when some one rides with me. Or I use my H-D Badlands seat when I'm solo. I hate to have to buy new seats. I've also got a metal fender(kinda like the Heartland fenders) that I thought about fitting on to see if I could use my seats that I already have.
Are you using struts from an '06 or newer or what? That's a good idea about chopping fender so you can use existing seat.
My bike is an 04 springer. Yes it is a factory bobtail fender off an 06 or newer softail. In my particular combination, you could get away with using all factory HD parts except from what I am aware are an 18x5.5 wheel and the struts. In the conversion, I basically changed every part on the back half of bike except the swingarm, and axle. I of course wanted more bling. You could resuse the caliper, caliper spacer, rotor, turn signals, possibly the seat, and not much more. In all there were quite a few parts to change, and I will try to list them below. Some necessary, some for cosmetic purposes. I think in total I spent around 3-3500 doing things myself.
i actually am re-using my factory struts. i cut the frame horns off and re-welded them out just wide enough (about 3/8" each) for my tire to fit insde the fender. then i can put my original struts back on using bolts that are a little longer with a 1/4" spacer plate that also covers that front empty hole on the frame in front of the struts. killing 2 birds and it looks original. the belt swapout is just time consuming because you have to pull the primary out. if the belt holds up good it wont bother me, but if it snaps i'm told a chain conversion is less than the price of 1 belt if you do the work yourself. fixing broken chains is alot easier & cheaper than replacing belts. figure i'll be into the project for under $1000 all together, but i'm painting it and doing all the labor with a friend helping out.
