I switched to Amsoil as soon as I got the bike, took it to the dealer to look at for the hard shift to second. Mechanic checked everything and said it was "normal". He said some bikes seem to be set up tighter than others. Sounded like BS, but decided not to pursue it farther. Figured if I can live with the 1st gear clunk, might as well get used to the ocassional hard 2nd gear shift.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say that you may have a metal bur where your shifter bushing is. Take off your shifter arms, and pull the guts out and check the splined shaft that your shifter arms attach too, you may find a metal bur. Get a file smooth it out, it may also just be really dirty, give it a good cleaning and a good lube. I will bet your problem will be gone.

ditto what Chris said. When you do this use a light weight lube.Too heavy a lube will not let it shift smoothly and retain more road dust.Clean the hard bushings good and compleatly wipe down the shaft to get all the grit in there off.If you wash your bike regularly you should do this once a year as maintenance.Water has a way of getting in there. It's a Harley, they clunk.

Yes, I'm guessing you also took off the heel shifter which would make it easier to shift and give more positive shifting. Just takes a bit to get used to. Does sound like the clutch just needs to warm up and lube itself esp. if you aren't riding it everyday (my '97 has a hard N when I start out cuz it sits more cuz I ride the Sporty more); the fluid will drain out of the pack some and will get slung by engine rotation. Do you allow 5 minute warm-up or jump and go? If it did it all the time, I would say clutch cable or linkage adjustment...

Suggest same as Chris. Put that heel shifter back on and stomp that baby. I had a real hard time finding N when I first got her with less than 4000 miles. Now she just clicks thru the gears with no trouble.

Any chance you riding with a snow suit and snow boots on??? Just wanted to know how you could be riding as cold as it has been. If I was riding the last couple months, I dont think I would be able to feel my toes, let alone hitting the gears.
