Default Options for luggage

Ok, 2001 Fatboy is the object of my affection. In order to show off a paint job I want to get smooth rear struts and a mammoth solo seat. I figure I will push the issue of removing the rear turn signals and use only the deluxe Kuryakyn tail and relocate the plate to the swingarm and pop in the Kury tribal cover.

Now...after that description you will see that I have very few options of luggage if the trip takes me past a day. I would love to hear opinions of what you would do or if I am making a serious mistake of removing my options just for looks. I love the smooth struts.

I figure a roll bag on the front is an option...and I will get one of those, but what about anything other than a backpack on my person for holding my 1/2 helmet or clothes? Maybe a sucker seat for throwovers, but no place for the supports to keep the bags from rubbing. Maybe a pack/bag, but how do I strap it down back there without damaging the paint.

Thanks in advance.

You can get a solo side bag for a little more storage but it sounds like you wont have much of a choice.

Put a microfiber cloth on your fender and strap to that?

Are there saddlebag mounting options that work well without strut supports?

What are the custom / chopper guys doing for luggage? Keeping it in the trailer?

With no mounting points left on the rear struts Id say youre left with very few options.Either a small switchback or a tank bag for a day trip will still work.I like the smooth look as well but chose to retain the sissy bar for this reason.

I added the sissy bar solely as a way to have a luggage attachment point, but ended up liking the look. There are some nice bags made for sissy bars that can hold a ton of stuff.

So the wide tire con-verts that are using the strut-less fenders or smooth custom struts are SOL on luggage? No sissy bars for them either, right?

I haven't purchased the struts, it was just that the stockers are scratched up from the previous owners indiscretions when using throwovers. Since I was replacing them anyway, I thought I could go smooth.

The other thought I had was maybe keeping in place a stock license plate holder even tho the real plate is on the swingarm so I can attach a luggage rack (Motherwell like product). At least I could bungy stuff then, maybe.

I have some side guards I used on the 07 Fatboy. they fit under one the bolts so they are easy to take off or you can leave them on. I used them until I got easy brackets. I am selling them also as I no longer have a need for them. I also have a http://garageleathers.com/ swing arm bag. I also have a luggage rack that goes from the license plate to one of the fender screws I am selling.

You can use the bungie cords that have plastic coated hooks and fasten down a duffle bag by hooking the sides of the fender, you can use the netting that comes with plastic hooks for the same purpose. I've done both for several years and have had no problems with paint scratches. If you're really worried about the paint, get some thin, small pieces of leather and fold them over the fender where you attach the bungie cords.
The only clearance problem you'll have is if you're running a fat tire stuffed into a stock width fender but that can be resolved by carefully flattening out the curve of the hooks so they are more of a narrow J.
