Ok so those of you that don't have sissy bars or luggage racks how do you secure a bag without damaging paint. I have a 2014 Iron in Denim Black and don't want to rub my paint shinny. Going to BBB nest month and need a good way to secure a bag with a few days cloths.
If the distance is reasonable then a backpack is ok, just tack sew a micro fiber to the bottom just incase it makes contact. If time and dollars allow, I would look at J&P Cycle for a set of soft bags.
I cant stand bags on a sportster besides a solo bag which I have one. I debated between a luggage rack or a sissy bar but its wouldn't hardly be used. I also thought about bungee nuts and strapping bag to fender but wasn't sure what to lay over fender that wont rub the denim black and make it shine.
I don't think you can really ride a bike without a few battle scars. I try to keep the tank & front fender nice but the back fender looks used & I have a rack & sissybar for trips. Unless it's a trailer queen show bike I wouldn't sweat the small stuff.

I hear what you're saying and you're right. BUT when you need a rack
it sure does come in handy. What we did for the OL's '13 Iron is use

You do have to be a little careful with denim paint. If you have anything rubbing on it, over time it will leave a shiny spot and there is really no way to remove it because you can't really polish out the denim paint.
One great way to take along some stuff without having to use throwover saddlebags (which will rub on your denim paint or any paint for that matter) or worry about something on the luggage rack rubbing the paint, is to use a swingarm/solo bag. And to solidly secure it to your bike, you can use our Bobber Bracket hard mount kit. What this does is solidly mount a bag on the left side next to your battery cover/swing arm and holds it away enough from your bike so that there is no way it will rub on your paint or rub off the powder coat on your swingarm. Lots of people have had that issue of damaging the powder coat on the swingarm by using straps or tie wraps (and those don't hold the bag very securely). We have sold lots of these and people really seem to love them.
We also have top quality handmade leather solo bags that work well with them. We offer two kinds, a basic leather bag, and a top-of-the-line super sturdy leather bag with a hard plastic backing and a removable ballistic nylon liner insert. They are available as packages with both the bag and hard mount kit, or you can just get the hard mount kit and use whatever bag you like. You can check them out using the links below:

Normal "bar hopper" mode
Loaded up for an extended weekend trip.
hope this helps,
T.
Barhopper mode looks like you're using the standard Harley quick detach rack, what rack are you using in the touring mode? Is that a quick detach sissy bar with the bag just hanging off of it? I got a great deal on a quick detach rack from Craigslist for $45, now I have to build up the nerve to go to the stealership and shell out the $45 for the attachment kit. Why do 4 bolts and washers cost $45?

It's an HD sissybar and Air Foil Premium luggage rack. Here's a different
