Loved the Cross Bones when I first saw it. About yakked when I saw the the battery cover was plastic. WTF. The rest of the bike was well executed in my opinion. The plastic put me off, but I kept finding myself drawn to that bike down at the shop.
I bit the bullet yesterday and bought the Cross Bones. Of course I ate up all $2000 of my rebate, and then some, putting a "few" extra touches to a bike I thought looked pretty damn good stock.
The plastic has to go!
Anybody solved the problem yet? I am looking for a sheet metal application to the problem, but I saw a poster (White Guy) had a leather cover that looked respectable.
I cannot believe that I am the only one that finds the thing objectionable and I think a MoCo fix ought to be in the future. Can I be patient? If history is a guide, not likely.
Apparently it's plastic to ensure the remote alarm fob transponder & unit don't have a problem talking to each other, which they would have if it was made of metal. Tourers have it behind a sidepanel, but not sure as this theory stands up to scrutiny with other softails, a they have metallic seat bases, don't they?
I've seen them covered in leather, suede and vinyl, but nothing really seems right.
I was one of the first to buy White Guys cover. That was back in May. I've been thru monsoons and it didn't bother it a bit. I like the looks and it's a real conversation piece. It goes from the tank to the rear fender and it is beautiful.
That seems to be a decent setup. I guess if there is some truth to the security system having trouble with a metal cover, then it could be problematic.
I sent White Guy a message regarding his leather application.
I agree on the plastic. Horrible. Heartland has a cover but it's metal. It also requires the ECM to move under the seat off the fender. That leaves the holes in the stock fender. I liked White Guy's cover but decided it wasn't for me and started making my own. I'm almost done. I left the ECM on the fender and shaped the leather to fit over it. It's on piece that replaces the stock tank strap as well. Gotta go buy the dye today. Pics to follow. In hindsight, with all the cost of the leather tools, it would have been cheaper to buy White Guy's.

You're probably right, but it'll mean more to you in the long run; unique & part of the bike/bloke bonding experience. Wish more would have a go themselves rather than being a slave to the accessories catalogue

You aren't the only one. Owners and onlookers hate that plastic piece. Mine will be gone as soon as I figure out which way want to go to get rid of it.
