As for trading in the Sportster, why aren't they giving you full MSRP since you're trading up to a Big Twin? You know the promotion I'm talking about? It ends on 3/31. Here's the link:

Yup, one year shy. I knew I should have picked up that 08 883. But no, I bought a used 1200 instead. Oh well. So, I tried negotiations over the phone today with the other dealer around here. I gave them all my info and what I expected. The guy said he had to chat with the floor manager. I called him back a few times throughout the day but no luck getting with the manager...the whole day...8 hours. So anyway, I'll be calling them back tomorrow morning to see whats up. I'm also checking out those ebay bikes. I've been watching it but none of them have been that low recently.
Wow, I just laid down the 20 on that cyclebuy site. Holy crap! They would've made a mint off of me if I took that deal. It was like a rush of knowledge to my brain. Why don't more people know about this site?

Here is a couple of reasons I purchased the extended warranty.
I might want to trade up in a couple of years. I figure if I do my bike will look pretty good to a prospective buyer with 3 years of warranty left and I might get more for it that way.
If I keep the bike long term there is more peace of mind. I ride in rather remote areas and if I break down. I get a free ride. Also my bike is financed for 5 years so I don't want to be paying on it and it sitting in my garage broken.
Works for me, might not work for you.

Dittos
when you are making payments + or - $1000 is basically a matter of $10-$15. at some point, the haggling gets old. just get what you want and forget the small details.
of course, dealers are counting on you feeling this way and thats how they make their money.
buying a harley has always been a pain in the ***. in the 70 and early 80s they were garbage, in the 90s you had to be on a 2 year wait list and for the last decade, you have to deal with people really losing their minds on what they think their harley is worth and asking 40k for a used bike.
in the end, get the bike that most fits you and dont sweat the small details of the sale. i promise that you will be spending a LOT more on the bike in the very near future.

+1 on don't be so eager. Had 1 of the dealers that wouldn't deal with me called me back yesterday (1 week after I was there) and asked if I wanted to come back in and deal. Told him I bought the bike Friday with the same terms I gave him. You could hear his sigh!!!! sure felt good to me though!!!
If there's no rush, it's probably worth it to wait until the '10 models come out in June. By late summer, the dealers will start getting eager to get rid of the '09 inventory before the new models start arriving. I bought my last two bikes that way, including getting my Crossbones for $16K OTD.
Of course, your selection will be a lot less by then, and you may have to take a long drive or pony up for shipping to get what you want, so that's the gamble.
If you find the exact bike you want at a price you can live with, then what the hell...it's only money and you're stimulating the economy.
