I have a 1996 Fat boy that I put a trailer hitch on and wired myself. I have checked and rechecked my wiring and everything looks good and works. The problem I have is that the lights on the bike cancel out and then turn back on. I am guessing there is a circuit that has a fuse because I will be going and all of a sudden I dont have any lights..30-40 seconds later they come back on! It really freaks the wife out...anyway, I was wondering if anyone has done this and if I need to put a different fuse in or do I have something backwards????thanks for any help
Sounds like you have an overload on the fuse or circuit breaker and when it gets hot it opens the circuit and the lights go out.
Do the go out on both the bike and trailer or just the trailer?
Both Bike and trailer go out, even when I dont have the trailer lights connected my lights go out on the bike which is really making me wonder whats going on...
Sounds like you cooked the circuitbreaker.
Replace the breaker and put LED bulbs in the trailer only.
They will not draw any load and the new breaker should be fine.
Electrical circuits can get a little tricky. If you just tapped into the existing light circuit Chief is probably right and you did overload or overstress something in the circuit.
Try changing out the fuse or circuit breaker first, its very possible that its not blown, but cracked. When that happens it will work and not work as it heats and cools.
The best way to get a trailer light setup on a bike, or car for that matter, is not to tap the existing circuits for the lights power. But install a relay box so that the vehicles turn signals and brakes only 'trigger' the relays. That way the trailer lights get their operating power off the towing vehicles main/battery power line without overloading the turn or brake circuits.
I just played the "match the color wire game" but I understand what your saying....I think???LOL I cant ride the bike yet because we keep getting snow but did go buy a new circuit and will try that first
