Default What is this part called ?

Hi, I have an '07 STC. Just behind the trans, between the two lower frame members, are two of same parts...look like shock absorbers or dampeners. They are parallel to the ground and at the minimum clearance (lowest level of the bike). I Don't have the shop manual yet. Reason I need identity of these parts is to talk to dealer about fact that
I get a very tiny drop off the rear end of one of these. Wipe it off and it's back in about 24 hours (bike still in garage from winter (near Boston), not on road again yet). Anybody had or heard of this as an issue?? BIke has 2400 miles on it. THis oil is not coming from anywhere above this part. Thanks for the help, Steve

Thanks SavHenry... now if anybody knows if this is an issue, a common one or whatever, would be appreciated. Also, are these oil fillable shocks or permanent non -maintenance, if so, this one must have a seal leak? Thanks again, Steve

Your transmission drain plug is above and in between those shocks. Use a long 1/4 allen head and make sure it isnt loose and leaking.

To answer your questions, shocks don't typically drip oil so i would say this is not a common problem. Secondly, they are not refillable by the novice...maybe a shock shop. If the shock is leaking, the dealer should replace the shock period. **however, i'm betting on crazy's answer above...check the transmission drain plug!!!**

I would also tend to look upstream from the shock for the leak. A leaky shock while not impossible, it would have to be defective from the start or have a gazillion miles on it to wear the seal out and drip. At the front of the can there will be holes that you can swab any oil out that's inside the can because if it did originate from the trans plug it will keep giving you faulse information. If you tape the holes shut for a week or so , you will be able to see whether the oil has come from the outside and ran into the can or in fact it is acutally leaking at the shock stem seal.

+1 I thought my shocks were leaking. Put a socket up there and make sure the trans plug is snugged up. Dont make it too TIGHT.

If it walks like a shock - looks like a shock - and quacks like a shock - then it's a shock.
