Although it seems pretty starightforward, can anyone relay any hints/tips about installing some "fat" internally wired bars on a new Springer Classic?
Specifically, where is the best place to splice the wiring? Does one simply remove the wiring harness cover from the wires once they are inside the bars for more clearance and ease of installation? Any specific brand bars better than another?
i judt put on s set of Wild 1 chubby bars. What i did was remove the tank. and disconnect the wires from their connectors....
do a serach on here for "wires thru bars" and you will find some good info/tips
I alos took off the rubber around the wires to give it more room to slide thru the bards.
Dishwasher detergents acts as a good lubricant thru th ebars as well
i usually just take off the dash and disconnect the vent and then slide the tank back a bit (and prop it up) just enough to get at the plugs.
Just write which wire goes where and remove the pins from the plugs. Feed them through your bars and plug them back in....done.
If you need longer wiring than make the splices closer to the plug so they're not visible. Stagger your splices so your wiring doesnt' end up to be an inch thick.
When I installed mine I was very new to the Harley world and I cut all the wires under the controls and then pulled them thru the handle bars and soldered them back and used heat shrink. This worked but was probably not the best way now that I know I could have removed the tank.
wild 1inc.com they are one of the best bars on the market.and they are pre drilled not like the
other cheap bars that just have a dimple but you have to drill yourself.the chrome is great
the wiring holes are cleaned and big enough to feed through.check them out.
p.s. this procedere can be time consuming.my dealer quoted me at 8 hours labor.
but i ended up doing my self in a weekend.
haksaw has the right idea, this way you dont have to drain the tank.Defientaly draw a picture so you put the wires in the correct place upon re-connect
It is a long process( the entire job), but worth it!
make sure you put in a rubber gasket where the wires come out of the base of the bars so the metal does not cut the wires.
i think they use the braided wire covering on the new wideglides and that seems to work also.
