Default Cleaning air filter

I have an 01 Fatboy with a round air filter. I think it is a screamin eagle stage 1. (don't know this is all new to me) Anyways I have been running it without the football air cover and it looks dirty to me. I think it needs cleaning. I have done a search here and I think I can clean it by spraying it with simple green, letting it sit, then rinsing it in the kitchen sink and put it in the sun and let it dry. Is this all there is to it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Best advice I can give is to replace it with a K&N that you can wash with mild soap, apply some oil and it will last forever. You can find them on eBay all the time for a reasonable price.

the k&n harley is not the same though washable, as the real K&N lifetime that one can buy.
I just went through that with the dealer.
The SE harley one is only good for X miles not lifetime... The one on My 07 one lasted 13k miles.. cleaned twice but the rubber seal deteriorated.
The lifetime filter that U wash and oil is somewhere around $13.00 more. $35.vs48$. at the dealer.
There was a recall on the 07's SE filters (the backplate rubber seal was defective from factory )so the dealer was going to install a new one anyway so I asked him to put in lifetime filter and I paid the difference.

Since it is an 01 it probably has the se air cleaner made by K&N, they stop using K&N in 05. Get a K&N cleaner and oil kit.

+1 on K&N. Run it through the dish washer, re-oil, and ride.
