With the non-oiled type I just used some purple power that I spayed on, left for about 10 min then rinsed it from the inside out real good and let it dry for a day. I do the same for the K&N oiled type, btu then apply the filter oil after the filter is good and dry.
spray it from the inside with a good grease cutter (simple green, power plus or even a mix of ammonia and water) let it sit for awhile and rinse from the inside through to the outside....they say not to soak it in cleaner in a container or bucket, etc. because the dirt will get in the liquid and move in around to the clean side of the filter, so just spray and let sit and then spray to rinse..then blow from inside with air to dry (or just blot with paper towels and let it sit until dry)
Wash it gently with soap and water by dipping it.
If it is cotton type you oil it with corrcect oil K&N good brand name.
It it is fiber Glass as all the NEW SE ones are you allow it to dry and put it back
