The buffetting comes from below the shield and isbest solved with wind deflectors as stated. Itis caused by tthe shield acting like a wing and causeing a low pressure zone behind the shield and in turn "pulls" airup from below. To make sure try this. When riding and the buffetting is bad try putting your left arm straight across your chest -across both nips in a horizontal position. If the buffettinbg decreases then lowers will help. The helmet shape does make a LOT of difference too.
It WOULD be a piece of cake if the upper bolts were longer. It's a stupid hardware kit. The dealer agreed with me. We went out into the parking lot with wrenches and he agreed 100%. Also took the one off of their showroom FatBoy... same thing.... upper bolts BARELY grab. Not enough thread....
Anyhow, $619 Canadian, with our PST and GST taxes. That was with 10% off. Seriously, the Memphis was only about $300. The Memphis mounting kit is great, but it was such bad buffeting tonight, I had to leave my winshield at my office about 15 minutes from my house. I plan on doing some touring, that's why I want it. Also, the bugs are like rain up here at this time of year.....
Dealer didn't offer any solution?. Like longer bolts or anything. I gotta think HD has to have some way to make you happy on your Fatboy. Is the setup that much different than other softails. If so maybe you'll have to trade up to an RK At 6'4" and wanting to do touring, that would've been my first choice anyway.

Maybe you need professional help to mount the $619 dollar windshield (on sale)?
Ahhh, I'm pretty crafty. I do my own wrenching. You can see some of the technical advice I've given on this site. It's very simple. The insertion depths for the upper and lower are exactly the same. Poor choice of bolt lengths...... I should have taken pics.

was going to tell U the buffering is from below... but it was already posted above.
My stock shield was really bad with a helmet on only. Blurred everything and as U said it would give me a headache after 1/2 hr or more. But with out a lid on it doesn't bother me at all.
I have read that the upper fork flares that mounts right below the shield will stop most of it but I haven't tried it because I seldom ride with a helmet on.
if U ride with it on again put you hand in front of your belly and move it around and then U will feel the updraft that comes up causing most of the problem.
I also read that drilling a couple 3" holes even spaced above the cross brace will help. It would be like the old shield that WindJammer used to make. They were vents but also helped buffering by eliminating neg. pressure.
if the bolts are to short, cant U just buy longer ones.

LOL it is quite funny.
When I bought my 06 Fatboy, it came with the HD windshield, rode it a few times, didn't like it, I sold it for $350cad a week later.
Try some wind deflectors, they might help.

They are proprietary... they have little notches for the useless spring tabs that are included.... Thanks for all the great advice. The windshield that I have been chopping up all night is going in the garbage tomorrow. I'll be ordering another one that Memphis makes, jut not sure which one. I can't belive that their R & D dept. doesn't pick-up on this stuff...... it's garbage without the "lowers" you guys mention.... I'll check their website right now to see what they offer...... JR
