Why is it that when I change oil in either one of our Softail Deluxes (an 05 & 06) that after putting in what the book calls for (3.5 qts) that it's always over full and I end up draining back out nearly over 1/2 qt.
Yes, I'm checking it warm and on the jiffy stand, not on the level.
Anyone else have the same problem?
Barry
It is because when you drain the oil there is still some that stays in the engine due to it's design. If you look at the service manual it says 3.5 quarts for a totally dry bike. Fill up 2.5 and run the engine a bit to let it circulate. Check and fill as necessary.
right 'dar in the manual

Burping is that burp you give and cut off to clear the cylinder

Clear the cylinder? Of what? Sounds like junk science...
never heard it called a "burb" before. Seems like a good way to scrub oil off the cylinder walls insuring a nice metal to metal contact the next time you start up.
