I've got 9500 miles on my 08 fxstc and I've tried 2 different shields on it ( a windvest and a hd quick release) buffeting is so bad I don't use either one of them. After a while you get use to riding without one. I agree about loving the bike though !!!!!!!!!

I have the 14" windvest on my fxstc as well. Takes a bit of tweaking with angles and heigth but works great. It can be adjusted from scramble your brains to 0 buffet with only a 1/2" change in angle measured at the top of the screen to the ignition switch. I definately wrote that dimension down in case I ever remove it for something and put it back. Count that 3 for loving the bike as well.

When riding the bike you should be looking 1 or 2 inches over the shield. Any more and you get bad air. Any less and you cant see anything when it rains.

When you ride without a screen, are you ok then?

How far away is your nose from the screen?

How much below your eye line is the top edge?

The nearer to your face the screen is, the less likliehood of 'dirty' air swirling around. Trouble is, H-D fixings are non-adjustable, so you're stumped.

Tape some hard plastic or thick card to the top of the screen & try several widths to see whether or not it makes a difference.

Try the same at the sides.

You may find a compromise at one point & this is where to aim for with a screen blade, which you'll probably have to get cut so don't bin your purchases as they may trade for a custom build if unmarked.

You may find you don't like what you've ended up with, in which case rip it all off & trade it for a Beemer.

Little adjustments are best & patience will get you there. Ranting wont..

PS - I'm not a real Reverend :-)

Great questions. When I move my nose wayyyyy forward, it's fine. If I duck down, it makes no difference. If I rig the tip of the windshield right at my forehead, it's fine, but there is a sharp edge pointed at the bridge of my nose. (scary) There is no adjustment to make it point at my face, I had to rig it to do that. I rode 5 hours to Ottawa last week with allen keys in my pocket and made MANY adjustments along the way. No solution. I accurately fabricated, rolled, ground, and sanded a 1/8" piece of plate aluminum and fastened it to the top of the windshield extending it up 2-1/2", and it made a slight difference for the better, but blocked my vision. I have now carved the wimshield down to a piece of plastibc the size of a basketball, and it's funny, because it's still buffeting... hahaha... all I can do is laugh. It's unreal. So, to answer your question, ya, I love riding with no windshield, but I had a pertty tiring 6 hour ride on Sunday doing 130kph most of the day..... and I was COVERED in bugs.

Well thanks for all the help guys.... Ya Chaz, I got it just before the snow fell, and spent the winter pimpin' it out. I LOVE MY FATTY, and most of the time, I DO want to ride with no windshield, but me and some buds are going to the USA in a few weeks for a long tour, and I need to be versatile with my ride. A few clicks, and it's a cruiser, a few clicks, and it's almost a touring machine. A Fatty should be able to bridge that gap quite nicely. I might look at the switchblade from National Cycle, or the Windvest as suggested. Gonna go Google some stuff now. Any more suggestions would be appreciated..... Thanks, JR

I'm with Sleeko. I have a low profile nostalgia and a standard height nostalgia windshield and I like the taller standard height better.

All of this is the reason I ride a Night Train without all that stuff, and before anyone says I'll get one when I'm older, I'll be 60 in a few months and I've been doin' just fine without windshields since 1967...and my buddy bought a new Street Glide same time I got my Train and he talked me into swapping bikes once on a trip...a few miles of being knocked around by the wind on that SG was more than enough for me...but it took a while to get my bike back because my bud was having too much fun on my Train, and I couldn't run him down with the SG...same experience when I was on some other friends Road King, Heritage Special, and Ultra Classic...not for me...
