I have an 07 Deluxe. Just went on a 2600+ mile road trip. The guys were saying that after I let off the brake and took off, my brake lights were staying on. I checked it at camp one night, and it seems as if the brake lever isn't going all the way forward after I apply the brakes. The brakes are not dragging, so it has to be something with the lever? Has anyone had this problem? If so, how do I fix it?
I changed the grips just after I got in in 06'. It didn't start doing it until I was on this road trip. It seems to me that the plunger isn't pushing out all the way? Just wonder if anyone has had this problem and knows the "easy" fix. Or do I need to replace or rebuild the break lever?
Is your brake fluid clean and is the reservoir full? The lever returns from the pressure in the brake line. There is also a pin that the lever pivots on. Could that pin be corroded?
I am a bit low on fluid. I went to the auto part store to get some oil for the cage. The bike calls for DOT 4 fluid. They only had "DOT 3 & 4" fluid, but not DOT 4 only fluid. I wasn't sure how sensitive that would be. I am thinking that maybe I just need to bleed the brakes and see if that helps. I just am not sure how it got low? I still have plenty of pad and there are no leaks? When I made it out to Colorado Springs HD, one of ther mechanics came out and sprayed silicone in the system, and it worked for a while. After a few hundred miles, it started to do it again. Think I am just going to bleed the system. If that doesn't work, I will tear it down and see if a seal or something is bad. Or maybe the plunger? Thanks for the help.
You probably would be wise to flush the hoses through with fresh fluid. the service manual has a flush some ware in it. Brake fluid has a tendency to collect moisture. I flush mine every 2 years. Might also check the brake lines, make sure you don't have a collapsed line
I just installed ape hangers with all new levers,(Chrome).
The lever that I have now does not close the switch all the way cause the tab is not thick enough.
If you can pull your front brake lever out and the light goes off that is your problem.
Maby your switch got pushed in from use.
I pulles out the brass tab holding the switch and bent it back out and that helped for a while but today I had to fix it again and I just made the tab bigger by wrapping some tape around it.
It is hidden inside so it can't be seen and it works.
Think I am going to try and flush it tomorrow. I had been hanging my vest off the bars the past couple of months and I can't help to think that it was putting pressure on the lever?? I don't think I have a collapsed line. If I push the lever foreward for a few, then it will stay off. It leeds me to belive that I have a problem with the plunger not pushing out all the way. Going to stop by the steelership tomorrow and get some fluid and do a flush. If that doesnt do it, I will probably tear it down and see if anything is sticking.
Deluxechuck, I also have the same problem and have had the hand control apart 5 times now with no resolution. I need like anther 1/16th of an inch to fully depressed the switch in resting state. I even went back to my stock lever from chrome Kuryakyn (which by the way fit very sloopy compared to stock levers).
Only way I prevent it now is I flick the brake lever and seems to go back to position..
I too was thinking that the plunger is not fully out all the way. thought that was I wild guess on my part.
My buddies were telling me that the brake light flickers from time to time.
