This the first chance I have had to log in to the forum since the first part of June. I was in a pretty nasty wreck on the 6th and I would like for all of you guys to know how easy it can be to loose everything you have ever had.
I was on a "fun run" with five really good friends. This run started at 9am and went until 6pm. I have always had a beer or two while riding. And on this day we had made it until 3pm with no drinking, and then the rain came. Myself and two buddies got our "show bikes" under cover before the first drops and then made our way to a tavern to get a bite and a beer until it quit raining. Long story made short....I had three beers and a sloopy joe sandwich over a hour and half wait. We leave the tavern and go to the car wash to wipe down the "show bikes"...lol When we were ready to head to a gas station up the road a couple blocks I got seperated from the other four guys. I wait for a guy to come by that is pulling a stock car on a trailer. After he goes by me he starts veering to the left to a turn lane. I am only in first gear at maybe 5mph. Once all of his tires clear the double yellow lines to the turn lane I check for any signals on the truck, none on the left or the right hand side. I go ahead and shift to second, now maybe 10 mph at most! He makes the hard right turn right in front of me! I hit him right in the passenger door with my foot! Thought I could put it out to keep us seperated(very dumb!). He just kept turning so I ended up hitting his front tire and rim.
I still have all of my left leg, but it was touch and go for awhile. I have a couple plates and a bunch of screws and more stitches and staples then I care to count! I have been charged with a DUI, but still have not got the results back yet. Even if I dont get convicted, I will be out thousands of dollars in lawyer fees and lost work. All for less then $10 in beer!
And for you that want to know about the bike....probablly totalled! That really nice new chrome front end is gone, both sides are all scrathed up, and them nice fat spoked wheels are both bent pretty bad. Still waiting on insurance company to make final decision.
And YES, I will ride again. And NO I will not be stopping for a beer while doing so.
Glad you are on the mend. Will the insurance still cover you even if you were charged with a DUI?
Yep. They are actually on my side and trying to get it dropped right now. State of IL has a .08 legal limit unless you are involved in an accident, and the it is .04. Which I guess is less than two beers???
Yeah, .04 is not much beer... Sorry to hear about you and of course, your bike. Heal fast and thanks for sharing your misfortune. Lots can be learned on this site...
Thank god ....It could of been much worse..We all have a few beers when we ride..Take the time to think how many times you got on your bike and thought maybe I had one to many but you keep on going ..Sooner or later your luck will run out ...Lets learn from this.I want to ride and converse with all of you guys for a long time..
