Go the gas route for now. Save the mechanical and chrome stuff for the off (winter/snow) season.
That way you don't miss any good weather riding days because the bike is apart in the garage.
I just took the K&N system off my bike for the heavy breather. It wasn't bad, just wanted a different look. It worked good but seemed expensive at $175.00 for a filter, back plate, breather extensions and small velocity stack.
I did it without help. It went on very easy. Just had a hard time getting the aft, upper, exhaust nut in place. I ended up using a pencil and a piece of putty, to get it on the threads. If the Fat cat had another 1/4" clearance, cutout in the heat shield, I would have been able to use my fingers to put the nut on.

11 to 1 compression, big cams, ported heads and a good tune.
