Just had to take mine off last weekend to put on boards - the local auto parts store had a cheap set of torx wrenches shaped like allen style with the short/long legs at a right angle. Worked well and the set was only 11 bux.
I just changed out the pipes yesterday and had the very same problem when finishing the job. I went to NAPA and bought two #50 torx bits that will fit into any 5/16 inch socket bit and that worked like a charm. The regular socket was too big to fit into the famale part of the foot peg shaft. It cost me $1.00.
BUT, now my bolt is 1 inch too long to go back in and my stealer is closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for the holiday weekend. I am bummed. Well, not me. My wife because it's her right footpeg that is missing and she can't ride with me.
This photo is the reason why I had to fuss with the footpeg in the first place.

Why not cut the bolt you have down to fit ( I do this by adding a nut that fits and screwing it on, before I cut, then when taking it off it usually fix's the cut thread ) and i'm good to go

Cut em down many times just like tommy t says. OR go buy a shorter bolt ( it don't have to be a HD bolt), allen head or torx. It's just a freakin bolt do it one way or the other and go for a ride
OK folks, I am in a similar predicament. I have a Fat Boy Lo and the passenger footpeg on the right side is loose. Noticed this when checking the security of the detachable saddlebags... the right saddlebag was loose where it attaches to the docking point on the lower right side. The docking point bracket is mounted using the same bolt as the right side passenger footpeg. How do I tighten the assembly? It loose enough that the footpeg spins freely and that causes the docking point to be loose. Any thoughts on how I tighten the footpeg and docking point?
