Mine does the same every now and then. I would just try a new set of plugs, but could also be a vaporlock type of problem. My friends does it too and his is all stock.

If I start mine in 1st with clutch pulled in, it does it from time to time. I make it a point to start in neutral and it does not happen. Makes it a little easier on starter and battery to kick motor over...
Mine does the hard start too. It's also carbed. I don't know what does it but it's aggrevating. After you have it hot and it starts doing it, I have found out to just give it just a little throttle and it will fire up everytime and not burp and fart like you are talking about. I guess that's what you get when you mess w/ factory settings.
