Just got back from a weekend trip to the KY Bourbon Trail. Stopped at the Kentucky Motor Speedway exit for gas.
Flush mount fuel cap on wife's '08 Softail Deluxe came out IN PIECES. Stopped at nearest HD dealer to see if they had one in stock, of course no. Parts guy says, "Lemme guess.....the bottom blew out?". When I said yes he said, "it happens to every one of them".
So, part is defective, and the dealers know it. Yet, it only has a 90 day warranty. I put these on 51 weeks ago. With no winter riding in Ohio, I'm guessing the thing has been filled up between 15-20 times in that period. And BOOM, the bottom blows out of the gas cap, and you have to buy the entire kit to fix it? UFB.
Your not the first to report that, and if you do a fast search you'll find out just how many times its happened to others.
Though its usually the gauge that fails more often the the gas cap.
I have had to repace both the gauge (led out) and then later the cap (bottom broke out) both parts can be purchased by themselfs, the cap is about 65.00 .
My dealer said that the proble happens when the cap is overtightened, since replacing it I dont tighten it any more than to get the gasket to seat and it has held togerther for the past year.
Wifes has come apart more times then I can count, but I have been able to snap it back together each time so far.
The entire flush mount system from HD is JUNK. the wiring on the fuel guage is too lite and vibration breaks it, so your lights don't work, and its not all of the lights, just 2-4 of them.
The caps are also junk. HD has known about these problems for several years now and still keep them on the shelf and in the catalog without changing anything.
That really goes to show how HD feels about thier customers...They could care less, as long as you spend your money.
Dealers know the parts are junk and still smile happily to sell them to you with no word on how bad they are. Greedy F***s
You can buy an Arlen Ness version, too. I don't know if it is any better.
You can put the cap back together but once it starts it seems to continue. I bought another one and quit tightening it beyond where it just seats. I haven't had any problems since.
I've had the same problem with the flush mount gauge and cap. I really like the looks of the flush mount so I ordered the Kuryakyn set-up over the weekend.
