I have an Arlen Ness Stage II air filter and rejetted my carb, short shot pipes
If I drive to and from work for the week I get 37mpg (70-75 mph)
Weekend riding/bar hopping and Offensive driving I get 31-32mpg. After friday 6pm, something happens to my right wrist and I like to do 85-90 every where I go...
It also depends if and how the bike is tuned. Most likely it has a different than stock air filter, and has been jetted. Taking it for a Dyno will certainly make it run better if it has not had one. Also, you can tell the Dyno guy (if he is competent) to tune for fuel mileage as opposed to power.
It is hard to really say without all the info. The questions are does it have an other than stock air filter? Has it been rejetted? Has it been dynoed?
I have same bike except mine is EFI. I tested mine last week (getting ready for a road trip) and got 37 MPG riding back and forth to work. It's 11 miles highway and 12 miles city driving each way, so it's a pretty good all around average figure. Plus, I'm pretty heavy on the throttle. I have found it to be higher on highway road trips and also higher without the windshield. I have gotten 200 miles out of a tank but I was just about on fumes.
I get around the mid 40's for the most riding I do but just stop and go it will go down to the mid to high 30's. It all depends on how much and hard you twist the grip
I've got an '06 Deluxe, carbed, with Stage 1 & windshield. Quite disappointed to only get 32 to 35 mpg in town, 40ish on the freeway, compared to 50 - 60 on my 1200 Sportster. Oh well, the price you gotta pay for a big twin.

We do not buy these for the gas mileage. Factor in tires, ins, and other wear and tear and it is cheaper to drive your SUV at todays gas prices. However the fun factor is priceless!! ~37 city/44 hwy
the estimated fuel mileage figures are done from the factory, on a closed course, to obtain the best possible fuel mileage. the tires aired up their maximum, a very light rider, and under optimum conditions, nothing that we'd ever experience in the real world. The numbers they get are during the right temperature, humidity, everything as good as they could make to increase mileage. it's a sales plot, a conspiracy i tell ya.
