So what changed to improve the mileage? I am getting 35mph on my 07 with 1/3 freeway and 2/3's city driving. I do have XiDE's that would be making the bike run rich...
I've tracked mileage since I bought the bike new, and now have 11,000 miles. I'm averaging 41.1 mpg. I do a mix of single and 2-up riding, and normally use a windscreen.
Checking mileage is such a subjective thing on these bikes, I can't seem to find a way to accuratly do it. How do you get the tanks to same level each time? I ride a 94 and fill the left tank first, I have no way of knowing how much fuel goes through the crossover to the right tank by the time I cap the left tank and start to fill the right. It's also hard to get them to the exact same level due to differences in the pump nozzels. Since we are dealing with about 3-4 gallons, a pint or two will make a big difference in the mileage.
That being said, I get about 40 as best I can tell. I warm it up good, I have a strong right hand and almost no highway driving.

I was a bit vague with my answer because I'm a bit shy on these boards...lol

I took my Harley into the shop 3 different times complaining about the problem. They keep telling me it would break-in and get better mileage... any way after the third time in the shop I told them they had better fix the problem or they could just keep the bike! Finally they did find a problem with a flange wasn't properly sealed and the bike was sucking in way too much air which was making the bike suck too much gas. I hope this make sense to you because it didn't to me too much, all I know is the bike runs much better an the gas mileage improved with break-in time.
some of the problems I noticed with the bike before the fix... was popping on decel and excel at lower speeds and the bike seamed to be (Flatulent ) and the bad gas mileage.
Go set up an account at fuelly.com and log all your fill ups. It will keep a running total with all sorts of stats. Might stop a few from fabricating stories of unbelievable mileage but I doubt it.
