Default 240 vs 200 tire?

Well now that I've given up the sportbike and going to the track, I think it'll be okay to just cruise. Obviously I realize that a 200mm tire will outhandle a 240mm tire. However, it's not a sportbike and I'm mostly cruising.

My question is, has anyone put a 240 on a bike and regretted it? I've already received my 240 tire, fender and swingarm. I'm getting ready to order wheels but having second thoughts. I don't want to put a 240 on and make my bike handle like an elephant on a minibike.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Mark

I'm debating the same thing, but have come to this conclusion... If you are going to be doing any speeds over 85, stick to a 200. If you are going to be riding alot of curves, stick to a 200. One of my buddies has a chopper w/240 and he told me that going any higher than 85 the bike is unstable. I like the look of the 240, but like the functionality of the 200 so that's my choice. I'm just going to get something a little different than the norm though. I'm ordering a custom swingarm... not like the ones offered in most kits..... Hope this helps a litttle. Research this forum and various others then make your decision.

RR,

Thanks, much appreciated. I don't do over 85, hell, on the HD, I don't normally run over 70-75. I'm not looking to corner since if that was my choice, I'd buy another sportbike but I don't want something so awkward, I wish I hadn't started this project.

Guess I'll have to try it and see what happens. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Thanks.

A frind of mine puy the P.M.Phattail kit on his duece(240) and has regretted it since. He said it's great if you're in a straight line but corners like a tank.I personally have'nt ridden it.I put a 180 on my '02 nighttrain because several people I talked to said don't go over 200 if you want decent handling.

Jim,

Thanks. I'm starting to think I may be going the wrong way. I'd like to get some more people's opinions from those that have done the change.

Anybody else have an opinion on a wider tire? Unlike the newbies that come out and ask how wide can I put a tire on my..... I did a search, I can't find more than 2-3 opinions on how a 240 rides.

Anyone else?

Thanks,

Mark

I spoke with a shop here in town, because I was thinking about doing the 240. He
told me that he would sell me whatever I wanted but he wouldn't recomend it. His reasoning was
it would create a push in the corners (not turn). They said not to go over a 200 on a frame not designed for
it. So I called Doherty Machine and have one of their 200 kits on the way!!

God, I hate to admit it but it seems that the general concensus is for driveability is to not go over a 200. I was hoping the difference in driveability was neglible between a 200 and 240 but I guess since I haven't had the opportunity to ride one, I have nothing to compare it to.

<sigh> guess I'll be putting a 240 tire and fender up for sale and exchanging the 240 swingarm kit for a 200 kit.

Thanks for your input nightrain.

Crush... it killed me!! I wanted the 240 kit too. But i was lucky enough to find a shop that
was honest about it. Another shop I talked with was fired up and ready to sell me the kit!!

I can't speak for the 240 like I have told you, but my 300 does make the turns (slow speed) a little different. As far as high speed (100+ on straights) I have no wobble or any other adverse affects, except my cheeks rippling off of my face. LMAO.

Any kit that will make you kick the primary out to line up the drivetrain is going to make a difference. Mine had to be kicked out 1 3/4".

Take care,
Baldman

P.S. Right side drive changes everything...ina good way....balance!
