Can the harley dealer lower the idle on my softail custom? If they can, will they. I have a feeling that they may get funny when i ask them to do it. I just dont want to hear the crap about things not working right if you lower the idle 100 rpm. Thanks for the help
It is set to give the top end a proper amount of oil. I doubt the dealer would even do it. If you want a slower lope get some se 203 cams installed. That should take care of it.
Well, the fact of the matter is; you will "hear crap" because its true. As stated above the idle speed needs to be a little higher to keep the upper end, lifters and chain tensioners working properly. Unless your idle speed is exceptionaly high, a dealer won't touch it due to the liability of ruining the engine.

It can be lowered a little if it's idling really high, maybe 100 rpm or so. Should be around 1000 rpm and not lower than 950 rpm from what I understand. I'm sure others are more knowledgable than me in this area. What is yours idling at now? Other post are correct, it must be at a certain rpm to maitain oiling and voltage. A different cam will make it sound lower.

absoluty 950 the lowest . 1000 preferred. theres a reason oil pressure possibley could drop to an unacceptiable pressure or not enuff volume of oil to top and the oil is what keeps the bike at temperature it could cause unnecessary heat which will cause unnecessary wear.

I understand all that. You have experts out there who say that you can't touch the idle and others that say there is a safety factor built in that you can drop the idle 100 or even 150 with no problems. for example i bought a harley lowering kit for my old softail and the dealer said it would only lower it 1 inch. Other manufaturers of the same type kit say it would lower it 2 inches. the dealer finally confessed and said that for leagle reasons they have to tell you that it will only lower it 1 inch. I understand there point of view. I'm starting to look at new ECU's for my 08 FXSTC. I'm just looking for advice before i spend 500 bucks on it. It will take me 2 months to save that kind of cash and i don't want to make a mistake. Thanks again all.
i very low idle is very bad for the lower end,it tends to flatten the roller rod bearings,on a mag morrelli t.body you can lower it yuorself, theres a little torx screw on the lower rh side (next to the a/c mounting bolt) a delphi will need a scanalizer
