I am installing Hill Country Customs 16" apes (internally wired) on my Heritage and am having trouble routing the small amount of switch wiring running from the drilled "exit hole" near the right-side hand controls to the right side hand controls... I am pretty nervous about tightening down the right-side switch housing due to some of the wires being bunched up inside the switch housing. Has anyone had this problem?
It sounds like the wires may need to be pulled through a tiny bit more to flatten the stack if you know what I mean. You don't want to kink any of those wires. Pics will definitely help.
I think I remember having that problem on the left side when I was doing my install. I pushed the wires back in with my thumb and held them down in the dimple while I wiggled the switch housing into place. Take your time and make sure all the wires are clear before you tighten it all down.
Yeah...it's pretty difficult to get the wires situated correctly in the switch housing...had to put the tools down at about 11PM last night because it was too frustrating! Hopefully with a night's rest, my brain will be able to function logically...My garage looks like a warzone! So far, I've got the throttle/idle cables/brake line changed out. I'm going to start on the clutch cable tonight after (hopefully) getting the right-side controls mounted.
same bars-same issue here last week,
make sure the wire housing (the rubber tube) has not bunched up or doubled up coming out of the exit hole. Then manipulate the wires into the dimple. It's not a job for heavy tools and hamfists. Although it feels like it should be
Thanks for the tip schwangster. I've tried pushing the wires further into the drilled hole and they may be doubled up on the way out. I'll look again...I'm also putting on new handgrips and hope they aren't the cause of these issues (the box said they fit my bike, so I'll trust it). It just seems like the wires within the switch housing are getting bunched up too tight, but maybe that's just the way they go (been trying a bunch of different positions for them). I know the switch wires should exit the switch housing underneath the handlebar where the dimple has been made...maybe I'm just not being patient enough.
