It's interesting that HD is giving an extra $500 on "competitive" tradeins. The catch is that the bikes can NOT be another HD bike. So ... HD will take your old clunker from any Japanese manufacturer and give you an extra $500 ... but not their own bikes. Smooth marketing move there.
As for the original problem ... sell it on Ebay. You'll probably get more than the trade-in and there's a good chance you can get closer to retail. I've sold 2 bikes on Ebay in the last 2 years and got great prices for both.
If all else fails ... go ahead and trade. Right now you can get a great deal on an '09 leftover (as much as $2k off on most models), so that will help make up the difference.
