Replacing speedometer with a Speedometer/Tachometer Combo
Does anyone know what the differences are in the Softail Speedometers are? They have the '00 to '03 as the same, '04 to '06 as the same, and all years after are all different??? I know they all mount in the same after market consoles. Not sure about the wiring harness though???
I noticed the same thing a while back. I wanted a speedo/tach combo for my 05 fatboy and really didn't have many factory options. The ones I liked were for the 07 and newer. I liked the HD Spun Aluminum model. I was told by the dealer that the wiring is different. I wound up going with a Dakota Digital and love it! Got a digital speedo/tach that will do much more than the HD models for the same money...actually about $75 cheaper. Some guys don't want the digital look because it doesn't match the flow of their bike but if you like digital they're hard to beat.
Yeah, I went through the same thing and never could get any solid answers. Hopefully someone will enlighten us both. You can get a Spun Aluminum speedo and seperate tach but not a combo. I've got a Dakota now but I would still like to know for future reference.

o7 and up have the 6th gear led. if you fine after market that covers the same years then the connector would be the same
I would go with a thundermax before harley
You can make anything work if you want to.. I'm switching my dash to a deuce console and putting a spun face speedo in.. Didn't want to spend $500 for the '07-later combo and the $199 '00-'6 speedo only didn't have all the goodies in it.. Saw a spun face in an '09 FatBob SE so I got that one.. 5" with a 6th gear indicator, clock, 2 trips, odometer and miles to empty.. Got it for the same price as the stock deuce speedo.. $275.. Only mod I had to do was change the plugs..
dustmaker, nice to see another poeria area rider in here... pretty sure it wont. i'd like to find out that it will. i'd like to switch over to the nostalgic speedo/tack. talked to a couple of the "older wrenches" over ta walter bros. on the later ones, the ecm uses something in the speedo to make some sort of adjustments. been a few years ago, and dont remember exactly what it was. kinda pricey gamble on a non-returnable part, with mileage adjusted. i'd like for someone to tell me otherwise. i wonder why they dont make the different faces to cover all the models. steve
