Softail Standard Sucks! You gotta make it YOUR bike....Make it a Softail NOT-SO Standard. Here's what mine started life as......and What I've turned it into:
I love the Standard ( not just because I own one ) You can do so much with it. It was a sad day when they didnt have it in the line up anymore. The softail custom is nice, but it just isnt the same. Here is my 06 Standard.
Most people put a lot of money and effort to make their standart look like an actual FXSTC. It's just beyond me. I chose the standart because it was NOT blacked out, and NOT chromed all over the place. IMO, it is the most "honest" softail. No bling, just a good ride. I just did things that are necessary to make the ride even better, like the big sucker, and the blinker relocation to the forks. That's just me.
Wanted a night train originally, and found a great one for 13k, but couldn't see enough difference to justify the expense. Picking the red one up for 9K.
Man. If you really want a Night Train, keep looking. There are plenty out there in that same price range.
Don't go spendin your money on #2. Keep lookin for your #1 choice.
That said, the FXST, FXSTB, and FXSTC are all basically the same bike and a great platform to go in any direction, just as everyone has pointed out.
FXSTDI is the Deuce, FXSTI is the Standard,
I like mine without the 'I' as it is easier to tune .. but alas...
The FXST as everybody said gives you the imagination to do what you want to do, and it is geared towards being 'chopped' .. so go Chopper, Bobber, it will look great.
The more Classic look you will need a Heritage for that
Here is my FXST , 01 ..
Best Mod has to be the apes, followed by the spring seat and the black pits (lower forks), lowring the rear and front made the bike a lot more fun as well.
Well, the plan was to sign the papers this afternoon and get it shipped but I received a call at work to tell me that it had just sold. NOOOOOOO!
Spent the day at HD but couldn't find anything I liked. The sales staff pushed and pulled but that just made me more upset and I went home empty handed. I almost bought a new super glide but it just wasn't perfect. I can't bring myself to settle on a bike I do not want.
Back to the drawing board... thank god it is snowing outside or I would be going crazy!!!
Wait for an '06 or '07. Bigger rear tire and bigger motor in '07. It was the best choice for me cause I thought the NT was too black, and I wanted a Softail. Make it yours.
Great bike. Thats pretty much how mine looked when I brought it home, other than my drag bars. The options with the standard are absolutly endless. I added a ton of chrome to mine and have now decided I am bored with the standard and want something a little more touring(ish). I just picked up a fatboy custom paint set on ebay and a set of street glide hard bags. The bags will be quick disconnect and I already had a fairing that I bought to make quick disconnect to the forks. Here are a couple pics of mine.
