took the bike for a ride yesterday after a month+ of sitting, and noticed that the console was not working (speedo, odometer, etc.). Removed the console, reseated the connections and it came back fine. However, now the blinkers dont work (neither front nor rear). All of the connections look ok, and all other lights seem to be working... Any ideas?
just found the accessories fuse blown... replaced it, turned accessories switch on, and the fuse blew again... must be a short somewhere, but have no idea where... I suck at electrical :-( Would be greatful for any pointers
I had a 08 Street Bob that did the same thing. The motorcycle was lowered for a girl and when I got it my 245 pounds compressed the rear shocks enough to rub the turn signal wiring insulation on the tire and then shorted. Hope this helps.....Good Don
In my case it was a VERY small chafe through to bare wire where the wires passed through the rear fender. The Tuner and tail light run stop module had put a bit of tension into those wires and the chafe was essentially invisible...sometimes the fuse would blow in a mile, next time 50-100. My fix was to leave the wires in place and put a series of tie wraps tightly around the bundle thereby insulating them from the hole they passed through. John
what year is the bike? there was a recall for the oil tank cutting the wire harness. they left a sharp edge on the weld on the tank and it would cut thru the ribber boot and short the wire
it's an 07... looks like i narrowed it down to the switch/turn signal wires... I remembered that a couple of months ago i installed chrome front master cylinder cover, which came with bracket clamps... and it looks like when i tightened the clamps, i must have pinched a wire. So after i spliced the wire sleeves on both sides and wiggled the individual wires, it stopped shorting and turn signals started working... Now the challenge is to figure out what side was shorting, as there is nothing visible that indicates where the problem is. I'm starting to think about the upside of this pain in the a$$, as I've been thinking about getting apes, and this might just give me enough incentive since I may have to replace the wiring anyway if I can't easily find the problem :-)
